The Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme operates under the guidance of UNESCO Member States, and its International Coordinating Council (MAB-ICC, also known as MAB Council) is its main governing body. It is composed of 34 Member States and usually meets once a year. In between sessions, its authority is delegated to its Bureau, whose members are nominated and elected from each of UNESCO's geopolitical regions.
The Programme is implemented by the MAB Secretariat, guided by a Strategy and Action Plan that is established every ten years in the World Congress of Biosphere Reserves (learn more about the Roadmap for 2015-2025).
Participation is by invitation only.
