Event ID: 54 Title: Participatory establishment of first biosphere reserves in Caucasus
The side event presents a practice-tested three-phase approach for establishing biosphere reserves in countries new to such designations: 1) feasibility assessment, 2) capacity building and awareness raising, and 3) nomination. Drawing on Georgia's Three Alazani Rivers and Dedoplistskaro BR initiatives and Armenia's first BR establishment process around Dilijan National Park, the session illustrates how this model supports UNESCO's MAB Programme implementation in Caucasus. Participants will gain practical insights and see how these real-world experiences can guide and inspire future biosphere reserve initiatives.
